We have already seen the most common uses of Present Simple, now it is time to check a little bit of grammar.

In general, the basic structure of a sentence consists of:

SUBJECT             +          VERB            +              COMPLEMENT

The Subject: Is a person, an animal or a thing that does an activity, it also can be a presonal pronoun. (I, you, he, she, it…..)

Verb: Is an action.

The complement: It is a word or a phrase after the verb  that tells you something about the subject, or the action that he does.

Another important aspect to consider is the type of sentences. they are:

*  AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES:

They respect the general structure of a sentence (SUBJECT    +    VERB    +     COMPLEMENT)

It is very important to remember that conjugation changes depending on the subject of the sentence.

When the subject is the third person (he, she, it) the verb CHANGES.

** Here are the rules when conjugating verbs with: he, she and it **

RULE 1. WHEN CONJUGATING MOST OF THE VERBS WITH HE,  SHE OR IT, YOU ADD  THE ENDING -s TO THE VERB.

Example :

1.- I wake up at seven o´clock in the morning.

Luis wakes up late on weekends.

2.-You think I am a very good student.

Susy thinks she is late for her lesson.

3.- We want to have brekfast now.

Jack wants to get a new job

RULE 2. VERBS THAT END IN -S / -SH / -CH /-X /-O.   ADD THE ENDING -es TO THE VERB.

EXAMPLES:

1.  -S

PASS

HELEN PASSES HER MATH EXAM

2.  -SH

WASH

MARK WASHES THE CAR.

3.  –CH

MY FATHER WATCHES TV AT NIGHTS.

4.  -X

LARRY FIXES CARS

5.  -O

STHEPANY DOES HOMEWORK.

RULE 3. VERBS THAT END IN –y.

** -y after a consonant …………………………….. C   A   R   R   Y

MARK CARRIES A BOX.

** -y after a vowel ……………………………………. P   L   A   Y

JAMES PLAYS SOCCER.

ACTIVITY 1. WRITE SENTENCES FROM THESE WORDS. PUT THE VERBS IN THE RIGHT FORM, SEND YOUR ANSWERS ON AN E- MAIL.

1.- ALWAYS / EARLY/ TOM / GET UP

2.- SOMETIMES / PLAY / BASEBALL / WE

3.- FRANK / LUNCH / EAT / RARELY.

4.- NEVER / TO / GO / BED /LATE / BROTHER / MY

5.- GIVE / ALWAYS / CHOCOLATES / MY / ME /AUNT

6.- PLANETS / ASTRONAUT / IN / GO / ROCKET / A N / TO / DISTANT / A

7.- NEVER / WORK / TO / LAURA / WALK

ACTIVITY 2.  MAKE A POWER POINT PRESENTATION TAKING THE ROUTINE YOU PUBLISHED, NOW ILLUSTRATE IT AND SEND IT ON AN E-MAIL

ACTIVITY 3. LOOK AT THIS PHOTOS, IMAGINE THEIR DAILY ROUTINE. WRITE A COMMENT DESCRIBING THE ROUTINE OF  ONE OF THESE PEOPLE. PUBLISH THE ROUTINE IN A COMMENT

INTRODUCTION

Indirect Speech is used when we report ideas that others have said.   Indirect Speech is also known as Reported Speech.

USE

Reported Speech in English is used to report the exact meaning of what someone said , but not in the exact words. Personal pronouns, possessive adjectives and possesive pronouns change according to the meaning of the sentence.

REPORTING VERBS

There are several reporting verbs, but these are the most used in Reported Speech:

1.- SAY: It is used with or without a personal object (me, you, him, her, us, them). When it is used with a personal object it is always followed by the preposition to“.

EXAMPLES:

I said to him (that)

2.- TELL: It is always followed by a personal object (me, you, him, her, us, them).
